A personal recount of a life within Berlin, Venice and the EU

Wednesday, April 04, 2012

We should all have the right to tell Israel "you are sooooo wrong" without being marked as antisemitic.

sobald er mißachtet wird;

und bleiben will, zuzumuten.

Warum sage ich jetzt erst,
gealtert und mit letzter Tinte:
Die Atommacht Israel gefährdet
den ohnehin brüchigen Weltfrieden?
Weil gesagt werden muß,
was schon morgen zu spät sein könnte;
auch weil wir - als Deutsche belastet genug -
Zulieferer eines Verbrechens werden könnten,
das voraussehbar ist, weshalb unsere Mitschuld
durch keine der üblichen Ausreden
zu tilgen wäre.

Und zugegeben: ich schweige nicht mehr,
weil ich der Heuchelei des Westens
überdrüssig bin; zudem ist zu hoffen,
es mögen sich viele vom Schweigen befreien,
den Verursacher der erkennbaren Gefahr
zum Verzicht auf Gewalt auffordern und
gleichfalls darauf bestehen,

vom Wahn okkupierten Region
dicht bei dicht verfeindet leben
und letztlich auch uns zu helfen.

E. B. thought a car would have suit me back those days...

Ill have the first drive of my life by myself in half an hour...and I think now while listening to Interpol, about this very beautiful woman, who once told me that she totally saw me driving a car..it was a long time ago, so long ago that she got married, have (at least) one child....
but I finally got it myself and am going for a drive

maybe with the Soundtrack of "Drive", to make it completely sentimental...

Dear John

...yesterday I was in this one bar in Berlin where I deejay from time to time ( also a lot of records of yours) and was listening to some tracks, sipping Brandeburger beer...after the "Rebirth of the Cool" by your old chap Miles, your "Ballads" with your quartet made its come back in my ears...what a surprise! What an epiphany of warm sounds and smooth atmosphere...

Oh man, you cannot believe how happy and uniquely moved your music still makes me, even more when your tracks come unexpected...
I regret so much that I never had the chance to see you live, neither the chance to say that you were still playing by the time I am born...

One record per week - one week with a record

This album is a must if you listen to me
The guy is bliss on a piano

I am considering a feature of this blog nobody reads where I write down my gotta-listen-to-it record of the week

Number 0 is out now

P.S. On NPR you could listen to the whole of it in streaming
Long live to (this kind of) Jazz

New words (for me) and old habits (for everybody)

Yesterday I was thinking about the idea of using internet with the bohemian, idealistic and shallow attitude by which you believe you do good simply by clicking or re-tweeting...
Today I found the word for it...

Slacktivism

Which I believe is very contagious though I am confident I am immune to it...

Greenwood playing Reich being hacked

How comes you are here?

If you happen to read this blog, please think that you either landed here by chance, in which case we could both thank internet for that (unless you want to sell me porn), or you googled my name, in which case you are a voyeuristic geek and should focus more on your friends on FB, LinkedIn, Orkut or Google+ (if you still remember your logindata).
In the very remote case you googled me because of a job opening, you should definitely read my CV and my cover letter and let this aside.

Whichever way you should listen to Wrecking Ball by B. Springsteen

By moving out old stuff comes out

Dein Mädchen-Kachi"

Possible lessons to be drawn:

1. Never throw away stuff if not necessary;
2. Germans forget using punctuation sometimes;
3. Suspect of all those people thinking you - or anything - is perfect.

Saturday by - 12 celsius in Berlin

Watched drive at the theater, thought of my short echo park experience last summer, went home and started listening to my itunes library on random modus...
Current 93 is the kind of thing that depresses simply by the starting thirty seconds....why do I keep it anyway?
My track with Matteo also came out...we had such a perfect song ready to be published, damn....

It is always nice when you get mentioned on an article, dude

Last Sunday night I talked with my friend Stephanie, the mother of the most wonderful baby I have so far cuddled, about some cliches about Italians. The discussion, started from der Spiegel after the Costa Concordia´s tragedy and continued by the crazily insulting strikeback of il Giornale on the day supposedly dedicated for remembering the Holocaust, had left some traces on me too: as a regular and long established Berliner citizen I realized to be more acutely sensitive to this kind of very shallow discussions than before.

Il Post started a discussion trhough Twitter and one comment of mine ended up in their article. Have to thank Stephanie once more!

Mmkakou´s new listens

Being on vacation is also about listening to (for me) new stuff in peace, in the hopeless try to catch up with the albums of the year...

Booker T Jones - Way back from Memphis (nice - easy listening)
Noel Gallagher solo project ( not so nice - an amarcord of the 90s)
Glen Campbell - Ghost on the Canvas (too easy listening for me)
Frank Ocean - Nostalgia Ultra (fell asleep with it yesterday night)
Tune Yards - Who Kill (not in the mood right now)
Wire - Red Barked Tree (I never got into them, sorry)

Algebraic

+ A new government
+ A different government
+ No daily bullshit -like discussion on every possible media
+ The accent posed on equal opportunities
+ A serious image to present abroad
+ a huge indirect popular support registered

- a bunch of not elected technocrats
- a bunch of ministers looking for the support of the same bloody parties
- a bunch of defendants of free market philosophy at (almost) any cost
- only three women out of 18 nominees
- a change that bypassed the parliament, whatever bad it might have been

+ The chance to play some jazz records any time soon in Neukölln
+ A night jam session
+ A beautiful plan for NYEve
+ Tickets for Radiohead´s

- A shrinking number of proper Italian friends
- A limited accession to optimism
- The indifferent silence of clouded people
- The absence of an alternative job so far

There is something profoundly wrong about the way people inside the italian PD discuss about fried lies and so may others from the civil society and the media try to get a sense of a senseless and awkward discussion.

The article by Luca Sofri on the Ilpost is a good piece...why am I writing in English I have no idea myself....maybe because I hope more strangers read this tiny blog....

Anyway new stuff I have been listening to:

Tom Waits - As bad as me
Pulnoc - City of Histeria ( thanks #pauladam)
Jonathan Wilson - Gentle Spirit
Liszt played by Pierre-Laurent (German Radio, thanks #ursli)
Sabu Martinez - Sabu´s Jazz Espagnole (thanks #adamridley)
Zola Jesus - EP Stridulum
Hank Mobley - Straight no FIlter (over and over again through my life Ill listen to it)
Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest ( awesome, it reminds me of my short Brooklyn stay)
Sun Kil Moon - Admiral Fell Promises (still in my top 20 for the albums of my 2011 year)
A song called Prairy Dog Rample by Andy Schroder (I believe I always knew the song but it definitely not true: that would be the perfect opening track for my radio program: which might one day come true)

The speech Steve Jobs gave in Stanford back in 2005 is something I came back to a couple of times in the last few years...he is a sort of declination of the American dream in the two thousands...rather inspiring...

Music:

Villalobos and the ECM Extravaganza
Beirut´s last album
Wilco´s last album
A deep pre-grunge revival (Melvins, Soundgarden and some Pearl Jam too...for Nirvana I need some more time)
Bud Powell on Verve (1953-1954?)
Interpol´s Turn off the Bright Lights all over again..like you dont know, uh?
dEUS´ last album
Radiohead at Colbert Nation: rather awesome
Andrew´s Hill Smokestack ( crazy good )
An italian jazz label named Auand
Anais Mitchell
Fennesz and Sakamoto
Rava and Fresu together
Jolie Holland
Saint Vincent´s last album
Detroit Summer Live Arts Media Project from few years ago
Sunbear concerts by K.Jarrett randomly...still one missing

....and few more I already forgot...

People I know make babies and get married...way more often than it used to be...

Nachträglich

At the end I had actually got used to:
chatting with my buddy everyday
big eggy breakfast
dreadfully cold tap water
smoking in the middle of the streets (well,at least 15 feet away from living creatures)
very loud regional transportation
24 hours wi-fi access for my kindle
visiting three record stores a week
no selfphone whatsoever
honey tasting sparkless beer; among others.

The plan of moving to N.Y. will maybe take a more defined shape soon.

Here an interesting chart by Google, which is kind of cool.

Oakland on wednesday

I misunderstand the level of acquaintance among people in her a lot....
Sometimes i believe that people know each other rather well but they are simply a customer and a client...just happened in the coffee place where I sit now...
People talk rather directly in here, though in friendly way...getting to the point seems the very first need and impulse to social interactions....

Amoeba
Went to the one down in san francisco!!!
Boy....oh boy...
I did stop before the jazz "section", which under normal circumstances would be a shop in the store itself...the dizziness i experienced half way through the shop is also unfrogettable...it looks like you could go ere twice a day...in the end you find so many records for 2.99 or 1,00...a dream...
Judah street and surroundings are amazing...could easily imagine myself living in there....

The ocean
At dawn, windy...smells great... a bar called the pork challet brews its own beer...
Finally went to the ocean from that side...sydney is definitely far away...in all senses...

In san francisco, drinking coffe and reading about possible ecological conversion...with new sunglasses bought yesterday in Berkeley at the fleamarket...if you believe it or not the stand where we got them is called "the black dude and the chinese lady". An awesome name and i am sure you all out there agree.
Work and Berlin and life in Europe are not as far as i would like them to get in the next tree weeks.

My room in Neukölln

From May 20th through June 16th you can have my room in Neukölln Berlin.
The apartment is 110sqm. On the 4th floor, it has bathtub, wifi and phone, washing machine, fridge and all you need.
The room is 20sqm. Two windows and a balcony heading east (around 4 sqm.)

Option 1: Room swap
You live in New York and want to come in Berlin at the end of May. We swap your room or apartment in the Big Apple with my room: I would be in N.Y. only from June 10th to June 17th while you could stay here for the whole period (May 20th to June 16th).
No cost for you in this case.

Option 2: Room rent
Price is 450€ to be paid half in advance and half at your arrival.

Here attached you can see some photos of both the room and the apartment.

In case you are interested, mail me.

Self consciousness does not bring me resolution.

Conscious as I am of the deprecable state of my working activities and of my social life, I nevertheless do not get to the next step of taking active steps to counter act it...

A thousand thougts a day keep me company...I could be anything, I would like to be this or that or both, it is a matter of minutes and the version will change, the priorities slide away and the inaction increase...

Self destroying is it not, rather preserving my schizophrenic attitude towards myself and life in general...

I changed the layout of this aweful blog...until I learn to XHTML properly ( here used as a verbal form like google) there is nothing better I can offer...
